Note about Rapids FC Tryouts – from the beginning of our club’s existence, we introduced the concept of “try-ins” and not tryouts.  At Rapids FC, we attempt to find places for everyone that demonstrates a capacity for select soccer.  We cannot always accomplish our goal of creating teams for all players and acknowledge that it may be best for certain players to continue in recreational soccer to gain more confidence and experience.  Part of our mission is to create a positive environment for your son or daughter.  We hope you join us and your child has a great try-in with Rapids FC!

If you have specific questions, please send an e-mail to info@rapidsfc.com.  Thanks!

Spring Update
Tom Ross, Executive Director
May 24, 2013

As we head into the Memorial Holiday weekend, we have just a couple more weekends of soccer for the Spring 2013 season.  Many Rapids teams are doing very well and have outstanding records.  It has been impressive to see the improvement between the Fall and Spring seasons, especially for our newer teams.  For instance, the U11 Girls White team lead by Coach Matt Woodend is currently 4-0-0 with 26 goals scored with only 4 goals allowed.  Last Fall, this team went 1-5-2 in the same division.  After a winter of training and indoor soccer, the team has improved both technically and tactically and is playing very well as a team.

Some of the highlights of teams this Spring:

• The Rapids U8 Girls Green team, coached by Brian DeHaan and Jim Bernier has continued their unbeaten streak.  After winning the U8 first division in the Fall going 8-0-0, the girls have done great this Spring compiling a 5-0-0 record with 47 goals scored and 4 allowed.  This team may be the best ever to play for Rapids.
• The Rapids U10 Boys Green team, coached by Tom Smith is 6-0-0 with 48 goals scored and 8 allowed, a nice improvement over a 5-2-1 record last Fall.  Well done boys!
• The U11 Green team is unbeaten and Coach Bre has the girls playing very well.  This strong performance follows the Capital City Cup where the girls won the championship by scoring 23 goals without allowing any goals scored.
• The U14 Girls Green team is 3-0-2 and has only allowed 3 goals this Spring after finishing in second place last Fall.  Good job by Coach Lindsay and the girls after losing a couple players to high school teams this spring.
• New Coach Michael Lee has taken the U11 Boys and U12 Boys teams to new heights.  The U11 Boys are currently 4-0-0 in the 2 excited about soccer and is working with Coach Michael on a possible international trip to the UK next year.
•The U12 Boys team is 4-1-1 in the 2nd division, much improved from the Fall.  Their only loss this year was to a team that is 30-2 over the past year and included some very questionable referee decisions with a game deciding PK.  Notably, the U12 Boys won the Capital City Cup in March.

Cherry Capital Cup – in Traverse City 5/18/13 and 5/19/13

Rapids FC participated in the Cherry Capital Cup again this year and had 16 teams playing.  The highlight may have been the teams gathering together on Saturday night at the hotel where 5 teams stayed.  It was very cool to see how large, yet how close the Rapids family is.  Quality soccer and good soccer development is our objective, but our philosophy is that Select Soccer is Family Friendly.  It was great to see the fun and camaraderie of the players and parents.  A good time was had by all.

At the tournament several teams did very well, and we have one team to highlight.  Congrats to Coach Scott Fish and the U10 Girls Green team for winning the championship in a tense and exciting double OT victory.  Well Done Team!!  A great summary of the dramatic win could be included here, but it is very long given all the goal scoring and swings the game took.  One notable item – in double OT, the referee incorrectly awarded Rapids a PK for a pass back to the goalie.  This easily could have decided the game.  Coach Scott and assistant Coach Brian Lawson declined the PK, knowing that was the incorrect call.   The other team was shocked but very impressed with the spirit of fairness and integrity demonstrated by Rapids.  This was a great teaching moment for the Rapids players and it was especially cool to see their sportsmanship get rewarded with a championship.

Capital City Cup – 4/20/13 and 4/21/13

Despite the valiant efforts of the tournament organizers, with the extreme amount of rain, the outdoor tournament was cancelled.  Instead, the tournament was moved indoors to the Soccer Zone in Lansing.  Several Rapids teams excelled, benefitting from playing indoor soccer over the winter, and took home trophies.  Winning their divisions were the U11 Girls Green team led by Coach Bre, the U12 Boys Green team led by Coach Michael, the U14 Girls team led by Coach Lindsay.  The U9 Boys White team with Coach Kurt Stauffer was unbeaten and the U13 Girls Green team and Coach Tom Ross took home a nice trophy from the combined U13 girls divisions.  In total, 14 Rapids teams played at the Capital City Cup and enjoyed a nice tournament early in the spring season.

Fall Update

As we enter the last couple weeks of the Fall 2012 season, we wanted to congratulate all of the Rapids FC teams.  It has been impressive to see the teams come together, have success and continue to develop.  Our primary goal at Rapids FC is for teams, players, parents and families to have a positive experience playing select soccer, as well as developing excellent soccer skills.  Thank you to all the coaches, assistant coaches and team managers for their efforts in helping Rapids FC players develop and enjoy soccer.

U8 Girls Green, Undefeated and Division I Champions

There are too many teams to highlights everyone’s success, but it is noteworthy to talk about our two youngest teams playing U8 this year.  The U8 Girls Green team, playing in the first division of U8 is currently 6-0-0 with an amazing goal differential of 56-9.  The girls will win that division and recently beat the second place team Crew Gold handily.  That Crew team has only given up 12 goals this year and 7 of those were scored by Rapids.  Arguably, Rapids FC could be the strongest U8 girls team in the area.  Congrats to Coaches Brian DeHaan and Jim Bernier and great job girls!

Our U8 Boys Green team is also having a strong season.  Coach Scott Fish has the boys playing well with a record of 4-1-0 having scored 28 goals and only allowing 6 goals… great team defense in a division that has many goals scored.  Well done boys!

Fall and Winter Training

Rapids FC is putting the finishing touches on our Fall and Winter Training program and will announce the exact details soon.  We will be training with our Technical Trainer – Michael Lee at Woodland Sports starting the last week of November and continue up to the week before Christmas.  We will start back up with training and 3v3 games at MVP Sports Spot for January – March.  The Winter Training and games will be on a rotating schedule every Thursday night from 5:30-8:30 each week (1/10/13 – 3/14/13).  Each team will have a couple of training sessions with Michael plus intraclub games.  Rapids FC will cover the cost of field rental and trainers for the Fall and Winter training.  We have made training and development a priority for our club, and importantly, your Winter Training program is covered in your registration fees.  Thank you to our two sponsors for the training program – Dick’s Sporting Goods and Mathnasium – Math Learning Centers, which have partially underwritten our training costs. We hope all Rapids FC players take advantage of this training opportunity and express their appreciation to Dick’s and Mathnasium.  Their logos are on our training jerseys, and those jerseys should be used for our Fall and Winter training sessions.  All Rapids players need to wear Rapids gear to training.

Indoor Soccer will start up this fall, with many or all teams playing during the winter.  Indoor soccer is an optional program coordinated by the individual teams.  The cost varies as most indoor sessions are $825 – $875 per team.  Woodland Sports has leagues on bigger and boardless fields, and MVP Sports Spot has many age divisions with three boarded fields for the indoor leagues.  Please check with your coach or team manager for info.

Coaches Training

Over the fall and winter, Rapids FC will also focus on Continuous Improvement for their coaches.  For those coaches new to Rapids, obtaining coaching licenses and improving their knowledge is required and the club pays for those costs.  More experienced Rapids FC coaches will look for additional improvement opportunities.  We are pleased to announce that Michael Lee will be conducting coaches clinics for all Rapids coaches.  These clinics will emphasize technical skill development, as well other elements of successful coaching.  Michael brings a unique background as his multiple coaching licenses were obtained in the UK and South Africa.  Michael has done a great job training with our teams at Keystone and has been impressed with the welcoming environment of Rapids and our coaches.  It is a well kept secret but most of the Rapids coaches have played soccer in college.  Since Rapids coaches don’t coach soccer full time, it is assumed they don’t have extensive soccer backgrounds.  Not true – and working with Michael Lee will be an added plus for our coaches and our club.

Thanks to all of our Rapids families - please share your thoughts with us and we welcome your feedback.

Rapids FC Welcomes Michael Lee as Technical Trainer
September 18, 2012

Rapids FC has hired Michael Lee to provide technical training for all Rapids teams.  Michael will be a roving instructor at Keystone on Mon, Tues and Thursday night throughout the fall season.  He will train one team per practice session, so he will do two teams a night and six teams a week.  Michael will train with each team at least twice.  Michael learned his soccer in South Africa and has been a player and coach in England and college.  He has an excellent soccer pedigree and we are excited to have Michael share his knowledge and passion of the game with Rapids players.

Capital Area Classic Tournament Update
Tom Ross, Executive Director
September 10, 2012

Congratulations to all the Rapids FC teams that played this weekend at the Capital Area Classic in Lansing. Good play, team and parent camaraderie, and fine sportsmanship seem to be the common themes for this past weekend. We hope everyone enjoyed themselves during a beautiful weekend for soccer. An early season tournament prepares our teams for league play and we saw improvement in team play throughout the weekend.

Capital Area Classic U12 Silver Division Tournament Champions.

A few highlights:

  • The U12 Girls – Green team won their championship in the U12 Silver division. Congrats to Coach Breana Brendsel, Coach Joe Force and all the girls for a job well done. The team is looking really good this year with a few new girls adding to an already strong team.
  • The U14 Girls – Green team lost in the finals of their division. Coach Lindsay Grosteffon and several new players joined last year’s team and started the year off with three victories by a combined score of 14-0. Nice job team!
  • The U13 Girls – Green team had an exciting experience. After a virtual tie to determine which team went to the finals, the U13 Rapids Green team lost in a penalty kick shoot by a slim margin 5-4. The team did great playing on a full size field for the first time this weekend.

Some of the younger teams showed remarkable promise:

  • The U10 Girls Green team went undefeated and finished 3-0-0 with a goal differential of 16-3. Nice job girls.
  • The U10 Boys Green team had a great tournament and won all three games. New Coach Tom Smith has the team playing very well. Congrats guys.
  • The U9 Boys Green team also went undefeated at 3-0-0 and scored an incredible total of 22 goals in their three victories.
  • The U8 Boys Green had three strong games and finished 2-1-0 in their first experience in select soccer. Nice job boys.

The regular season starts for all Rapids teams this week. Good luck to all!
